A Family-run, local business built on a rich Yorkshire history

Historically, Givendale was an important farming community managed and established by the Weddell family, who owned Newby Hall in 1748.

The 18th century cottages overlook the site of a medieval moated manor house, believed to have been home to the Nubie family, who owned the surrounding land, including Newby Hall’s park, in the 13th century.

The period cottages were lovingly renovated and refurbished in 2025, retaining their period charm along with carefully designed interiors and gardens adding a touch of luxury and all the modern comforts. The cottages are filled with character – exposed wood beams, log burners, antiques, cosy, warm interiors blend with luxurious bedding and crisp white sheets, and modern appliances. There are enclosed gardens with furnished terraces overlooking a sensational view – the perfect rural escape!

While guests are left in privacy to enjoy a tranquil, home-from-home stay, the whole family plays a part in delivering an unforgettable Yorkshire experience. Guests can also purchase a range of seasonal home produce from the Orchard Box, run by the Givendale Girls.

This includes freshly laid eggs from our Light Sussex hens, homemade jam and homemade apple juice. The girls will also be helping Shanie develop the cut-flower patch, so guests can order bunches of flowers during the summer months.

The History of Givendale Cottages

The cottages, once workers’ cottages for Newby Hall – were renovated and refurbished in 2025. Historically, Givendale was an important farming community managed and established by the Weddell family, who owned Newby Hall in 1748. The cottages overlook the site of a medieval moated manor house, believed to have been home to the Nubie family, who owned the surrounding land, including Newby Hall’s park, in the 13th century.

A true labour of love, Shanie has poured her passion for interiors, art, gardens and hosting into every detail. Now training in garden design, she plans to bring her learning into the cottage gardens, with exciting plans for both the cottages and grounds in the months ahead.

We thoroughly enjoy welcoming our guests and have met some wonderful people who have kindly left us lovely reviews. We love sharing this very special place – surrounded by natural beauty, yet just five minutes from Ripon and within easy reach of Harrogate, York and the Yorkshire Dales. We look forward to welcoming new visitors and seeing many returning guests this year.
