You’ve got the outfit. You’ve sorted the gift. You’ve RSVP’d yes. Now comes the part that’s surprisingly harder than all of that: finding somewhere good to stay.
If you’re attending a wedding in North Yorkshire, particularly around Ripon, Harrogate or York, the accommodation question tends to go one of two ways. You book a generic hotel room near the venue and spend the weekend shuttling between a characterless corridor and a car park. Or you find somewhere that turns the whole trip into more than just a wedding, somewhere you can gather with family or friends, spread out, enjoy the Yorkshire countryside, and make a proper weekend of it.
Givendale Cottages offers the second option. A pair of beautifully restored 18th-century country cottages on the Newby Hall Estate near Ripon, sleeping up to 9 guests across 5 bedrooms when booked together. For wedding guests travelling in a group, whether that’s extended family, the bride’s university friends, or three couples who’d rather share a kitchen than eat another hotel breakfast, it’s a setup that works particularly well.
Why a Cottage Beats a Hotel for a Wedding Weekend

A hotel room does the job on the night. But a wedding is rarely just the day itself. There’s the getting-ready, the morning-after breakfast, the debrief over coffee where everyone agrees the speeches were brilliant and the band was questionable. A cottage gives you space for all of that.
At Givendale, Moat Cottage (sleeping 4) and Chantry Cottage (sleeping 5) sit side by side with interlinking gardens and terraces. Each has its own sitting room, fully equipped kitchen, log burner and enclosed garden. Book them together and you get the sociability of a shared holiday with the privacy of separate front doors, ideal when someone wants to nurse a sore head in peace the next morning.
The setting helps too. The cottages sit on the banks of the River Ure, surrounded by woodland and open parkland, with views towards the Yorkshire Dales. After a long evening in heels, waking up to that rather than a hotel car park makes a difference.
Wedding Venues We Can Provide Guest Accommodation For
North Yorkshire has an almost unreasonable concentration of beautiful wedding venues. Here’s where Givendale sits in relation to the most popular ones, so you can work out whether the commute from pillow to pew makes sense.
Newby Hall (On the same estate)

This one barely needs a commute at all. Newby Hall hosts weddings in The Orangery, a contemporary steel and glass marquee set in a private, leafy area of the estate, seating up to 120 guests. Given that Givendale Cottages sit within the Newby Hall Estate grounds, you could feasibly walk to the wedding. The miniature railway is even available for wedding parties. If you’re attending a Newby Hall wedding and staying at Givendale, the logistics could not be simpler.
Grantley Hall (10 minutes)

One of Yorkshire’s most prestigious luxury wedding venues, Grantley Hall sits just outside Ripon and hosts celebrations for up to 150 guests. It’s a ten-minute drive from Givendale. Grantley often requires exclusive use for larger weddings, which means its own rooms fill up fast. Staying at Givendale gives you a high-quality alternative without the Grantley Hall price tag on the room, and you’ll get a better breakfast (the one you make yourself, in your own kitchen, at whatever time you feel like it).
Ripon Cathedral (5 minutes)

The Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Wilfrid dates back to the 7th century and is one of North Yorkshire’s most striking settings for a church wedding. Ripon is five minutes from Givendale by car, so whether the reception is at the cathedral itself or at a nearby venue, you’re well placed.
Markenfield Hall (15 minutes)

A moated medieval manor house hidden in the rolling countryside between Ripon and Harrogate. Markenfield is small, intimate, and looks like something from a period drama. The kind of venue where guests audibly gasp when they arrive. Fifteen minutes from Givendale.
Rudding Park (25 minutes)

A Grade I listed Regency house set in expansive grounds just south of Harrogate, Rudding Park is one of the region’s most popular wedding venues. The gardens, chapel, and woodland make for exceptional photographs. About 25 minutes from Givendale, with a straightforward drive.
Swinton Estate (20 minutes)

Set in 20,000 acres of the Yorkshire Dales near Masham, Swinton Estate offers a grand country house wedding with an extensive collection of rooms for different celebration sizes. Twenty minutes from Givendale, heading west into increasingly beautiful countryside.
The Sun Pavilion, Harrogate (20 minutes)

A fairytale Regency pavilion nestled in Harrogate’s Valley Gardens. The Sun Pavilion was restored and reopened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998, and it’s been a beloved wedding venue since. Twenty minutes from Givendale, right in the heart of the spa town.
Allerton Castle (25 minutes)

A Gothic Revival castle near Knaresborough with soaring ceilings, ornate interiors and extensive grounds. Allerton Castle hosts exclusive-use weddings and is about 25 minutes from Givendale. If you’re attending a wedding here, the drive back through the Yorkshire evening is half the fun.
Fountains Abbey (10 minutes)

The 12th-century Cistercian abbey ruins and Studley Royal Water Garden form a UNESCO World Heritage Site that provides one of the most atmospheric wedding backdrops in England. Ten to fifteen minutes from Givendale and already a favourite day out for cottages guests.
Making a Weekend of It
One of the real advantages of staying at Givendale for a wedding is that you don’t have to rush off on Sunday morning. The location gives you options for before and after the big day.
The morning after, a gentle walk through the Newby Hall Estate grounds is about as restorative as it gets. Paths run along the River Ure through parkland and woodland, and the terrain suits everyone, including anyone who overdid it on the dance floor. If you want a proper breakfast out, Ripon is five minutes away with a good choice of independent cafes, or Harrogate is twenty minutes for something a bit more polished. For more ideas on where to eat and drink, there’s a dedicated guide on the Givendale website.
For groups staying two or three nights, there’s plenty to fill the days around the wedding. Fountains Abbey is an easy half-day trip. York is forty minutes away and needs no introduction. The Yorkshire Dales are within reach for anyone wanting a longer walk. And if the group includes dogs, Givendale is genuinely dog-friendly, with enclosed gardens and riverside walks from the doorstep. There’s a full dog-friendly holidays guide on the website.
